About Agnes Knowles:

Agnes Murphy Knowles was born and raised in Bennington, Vermont. She graduated from the former Bennington High School in 1949 and also attended St. Joseph’s Business School in Bennington. Agnes eventually moved to New Milford, Connecticut, where she and her husband, Samuel, were long-time residents.

Although Agnes worked in the banking profession for many years, it was her long and varied service to the community that led us to name an award in her honor. Agnes served on the New Milford Board of Finance for eight years, the Democratic Town Committee for 30 years, the Economic Development Commission for 21 years, the Eliot Pratt Board for 25 years, and the Police Commission for eight years. She was a county sheriff for five years, a member of the Board of Selectmen for two years, and a board member of the Police Facilities Revue Board.

Agnes Knowles passed away in March of 1997, at the age of 66, leaving a legacy of responsible citizenship that few will ever match and that we are happy to keep alive.
